Spillane & Co Wealth Management
Colwyn Bay & District Evening Cricket League
Match Reports 2010
Week 1
Hopes of a full programme of cricket in the opening week of the 2010 Spillane & Wealth Management, Colwyn Bay & District Cricket League were dashed when the weather once again intervened. All Wednesday’s games involving; Rydal v Pen Y Bryn, Penrhyn Arms v Rhos Fynach Tavs and Conwy Celts v St David's College were called off because of rain – each team receiving 1pt.
Of the games that were played there were some close matches and a lot of good individual performances with both bat and ball.
In Division One, last seasons runners-up Llandrillo College showed their early intentions of going one better this year with a comprehensive 58 run victory over newly promoted Bryn Y Neuadd. College batted first and posted 141-4 with Anwar Anwan hitting 52 runs retired off only 37 balls. Bryn Y Neuadd had no answer to some very good bowling and were skittled out for 83 with only Jez Shea offering any resistance with 44. For the College Amer Sarder 4 for 11, Neil Bryan 3 for 21 and Srivatsa Sambamurthy 7 balls 3 wickets for no runs were the stars. College pick up 6pts with BYN 0pts.
Down at Gwydir Park, Mochdre CC 143-2 enjoyed a 15 run victory over Llanrwst 128-8. J. Hawley top scoring for the visitors with 53 retired well supported by A. Jones 48. For the home side S. Thomas top scored with 40. Mochdre 5pts - Llanrwst 1pt.
The only game played in Division Two saw Caerhun 75-7 beat Conwy 71-7 by three wickets in a closely run contest. The visitors batted first and Dan Davies top scored with 16 and despite some good bowling by Conwy – Dan Davies 4-12 the Caerhun were guided to victory by a fine 32 n.o. by Lewis Pike. Caerhun 5pts – Conwy 2pts.
In Division 3, new team Abergele got their season off to a winning start with a narrow victory over last season's runners-up Eirias HS. Eirias batted first and posted 85-9 Tom Roberts top scoring with 21 and Rich Marsh-Evans taking 4-13. The home side scored 86-5 with only a few balls to spare to win by 5 wickets with Ed Rooney scoring 26 n.o. Abergele 5pts – Eirias HS 2pts.
After not winning a single game last season, Colwyn Bay Rugby Club got life off in Division 3 with a comfortable home victory over Robertsons. The visitors batted first and some good bowling by Bryan Phillips 3-22 restricted Robertsons to 76 all out. The Rugby Club knocked the required runs off with ease scoring 79-3 to win by 7 wickets. D. Parry top scored with 39 and Brian Phillips capped off a fine all-round performance with 26. CBRFC 6pts – Robertsons 0pts.
Week 2
After losing three games to the weather in Week 1 I am pleased to report that all games in Week 2 went ahead as planned. Again, as with last week, there were some outstanding performances with bat and ball, none more so that of Tom Roberts from Caerhun who hit 55 n.o. off only 13 balls!!!!!
After having their first game washed out last week, reigning Division One champions Ysgol Pen Y Bryn got their title defence under way with a comfortable 8 wicket victory over Llanrwst. The visitors from down the valley batted first posting 115 for 5 with Scott Thomas 53 retired and Chris Spillane taking 2-22. Pen Y Bryn took just 9.3 overs to reach 116 for 2 with Chris Rowley 45, Barry Picton 40 n.o. and a fine 6 n.o. from 11 year old debutant Owen Rhodes. Pen Y Bryn 5pts Llanrwst 1pt.
Elsewhere in Division One Rydal Penrhos eased to a 6 wicket victory over Bryn Y Neuadd at Bethesda. BYN batted first and made 137 for 1 with Abdul Waheed 54 ret and Jez Shea 43 the main contributors. Rydal reached the required 138 losing only 4 wickets with G. Goodson 35 and D. McGhee 34 top scoring. Rydal 4pts BYN 1pt.
Mochdre 157 for 6 had a narrow 13 run victory over Llandrillo College 144 for 4. Top scoring for Mochdre were P. Buckley 44 and A. Jones 39 while D.McIntyre took 4-36. Despite a second successive fifty from Anwar Awan 52 retired, College fell just short with their next top scorer being wides with 21!! Mochdre 4pts College 2pts
Both games in Division Two were tight affairs with Rhos Fynach Taverners beating Caerhun by just one run. The Fynach batted first and posted 134 for 6 with Graham Heath top scoring with 25 and P. Lowe taking 2-21. In reply Caerhun scored 133 all out with Dave Owen taking 3-21. As previously mentioned, Tom Roberts smashed his way to 55 runs from just 13 balls including six 6’s and four 4’s. Tom retired on 55 and returned to the crease at the start of the 14th over as the non striker and with just two runs required for victory he never got to face a ball as the last Caerhun man fell at the other end. A truly magnificent individual performance from Tom. Rhos Fynach 6pts Caerhun 1pt.
In the other game Conwy 132 for 4 beat Lex XI 122 for 4 by 10 runs. For Conwy Dan Wilson 52 ret and Dan Davies 34 top scored with Jordan Kane taking 2-31. Despite a fine 51 ret by Luke Regan and 36 from L. Jones, Lex XI fell just short in an exciting game. Conwy 4pts Lex XI 1pt.
In Division Three, St David's College 108 for 4 had a comfortable 6 wicket victory over Robertsons 106 all out – no match details known. St David's 6pts Robertsons 0pts
Eirias HS. thrashed Colwyn Bay Rugby Club by 86 runs. Eirias batted first and scored 170 for 4 with T. Roberts 56 ret and M. Williams 53 top scoring. Despite a fine 42 n.o. from D. Parry the Rugby Club could only muster 84 all out with Dan Ferrier 5-28 and Joe Chapman 3-13 doing the damage with the ball. Despite the heavy defeat I am told that the game was played in great spirits by both clubs – well done! Eirias HS 6pts CBRFC 0pts
The final game in Division three was another close one with Abergele 150 for 8 beating Conwy Celts 148 for 5 by 2 wickets. The Celts batted first and a fine 51 n.o. from Chris Jones helped them post a very competitive total. For the home side Ant Howe starred with the ball taking 4-19. Abergele gave chase with A. Jamil 50 ret being the backbone of the reply. Despite Nick Davies taking 4-23 for the Celts, the home side reached the required total with just two wickets to spare. Yet another exciting and closely fought game! Abergele 5pts Conwy Celts 2pts
Week 3
Once again the weather was kind to us this week with all games being played – has summer finally arrived???
Top game in Division 1 this week was the clash of last season’s top two teams Llandrillo College and Ysgol Pen Y Bryn. I am led to believe that the game was a feisty affair complete with controversy and incident. PYB batted first and posted a competitive total of 95 for 7 with D. Atkinson 54 ret top scoring. Dave Moulson starred with the ball for the College with excellent figures of 4-1-5-3. The College reply got off to a steady start, however in the 5th over opener Neil Bryan unfortunately dislocated his shoulder (best wishes for a speedy recovery Neil). This did not seem to disrupt the College’s game plan with them reaching 101 for 3 in the 11th over to win by 7 wickets. College opener Anwar Awan led the way with 47 – finally getting out after retirements in his two previous matches giving him an average of 151 – well done Anwar.
Down at Gwydir Park there was an exciting low scoring game involving Llanrwst and Bryn Y Neuadd. The visitors batted first and lost all their wickets for only 56 runs from 8 overs with Scott Thomas taking 3-12. Llanrwst must have thought the small total was a formality, however how wrong they were. Some excellent bowling from Nathan Hales 3-8 and Steve Meek 3-10 restricted the home side to 41 all out which saw BYN sneak an unlikely 15 run victory. The result made even more sweet as they only had 10 players.
The other game in Division 1 saw Rydal 145 for 4 ease to a 34 run victory over Mochdre 111 for 7. Top scorers were H. Ventke 35 for Rydal and A. Buckley 30 n.o. for Mochdre.
In Division 2, last seasons Div 3 champions Penrhyn Arms got off to a winning start with an excellent 84 run victory over an under strength Caerhun side. Batting first The Arms posted a good total of 147 for 7 with Bryn Hughes reaching 51 ret well supported by Richard Hooper 28. Caerhun’s reply got off to a slow start with wickets falling at regular intervals and when last week’s hero Tom Roberts was out for just 4 The Arms went in for the kill. Some fine bowling by Gary James 5-15 and good fielding restricted Caerhun to 63 all out.
There was a tight entertaining game at Brackley Ave involving Rhos Fynach Taverners and Lex XI. Lex batted first and despite a slow start posted 129 for 6 with Jordan Kane 54 ret leading the way and Andy Greenland taking 3-28. The Fynach’s reply got off to a steady start however they were pegged back by some tight Lex bowling and when Jordan Kane took two wickets in consecutive balls The Fynach’s reply faltered and they fell short by just 9 runs, Kane taking 4-49. Sounded a really exciting game – well done to both sides.
In Division 3 Eirias High School won their match with St David's College by 40 runs. Eirias batted first and scored 110 all out – Andrew Bohana showing his students the way by taking 5 wickets. The College could only manage 70 for 8 in reply.
At Bodlondeb, Conwy Celts enjoyed a comfortable 54 run victory over Colwyn Bay Rugby Club. Celts batted first and a fine opening partnership from M. Wolmarans 53 ret and D. Wilkinson 44 saw them post a fine total of 162 for 6. Best bowling for the visitors came from A. Edwards 4-35. The Rugby Club reply was always behind the required rate and despite B. Phillips 32 and S. Williams 27 they could only manage 108 for 5.
Week 4
Performance of the week must go to Division 2 side Lex XI who amassed a mammoth total of 196 off their 15 overs, without losing a single wicket against Penrhyn Arms. All of the top three Lex batsmen; Jordan Kane 52, Lewis Jones 52 and Luke Regan 51 retired after reaching their respective 50s. The Arms batted and despite a quick fire 28 from Mark Nellist, the required total was always going to be out of reach. Despite 3 wickets for Trevor Taylor, The Arms batsmen showed some stubborn resistance with Andy McDonald 27 n.o. seeing them through to 95 for 9 to secure a bonus point.
The other game in Division 2 saw Conwy 175 for 4 beat Caerhun 110 for 9 by 65 runs. For Conwy Dan Wilson 54 ret was top scorer, with Dan Davies taking 4 Caerhun wickets for only 9 runs.
Rydal Penrhos kept up their unbeaten start in Division 1 with a comfortable 37 run victory over Llanrwst. Rydal batted first and posted 137 for 8 with Tim Cashell 50 ret leading the way. Llanrwst could only manage 100 for 9 leaving them still looking for their first win of the season.
Llandrillo College had an easy 7 wicket victory over an under strength Bryn Y Neuadd side. The hospital side batted first and could only muster 66 all out with only two batsmen reaching double figures; Dave Moulson 5-19 doing the damage with the ball. The College didn’t find things easy in their reply, however despite losing a couple of cheap early wickets they reached 67 for 3 to claim victory.
Elsewhere in Division 1 last year’s champions continued with their indifferent start, losing by 2 wickets to Mochdre. The school side batted first and posted 115 all out with Scott Brewster 33 top scoring; Geoff Hawley taking 3-14 for the visitors. Mochdre were pegged back by some good PYB bowling, Andy Spillane 3-20 and needed a fine 53 ret from James Hawley to see them to 117 for 8.
In Division 3 Abergele maintained their excellent start to the season with a comfortable 83 run victory over Colwyn Bay Rugby Club. The home side batted first and good contributions from all the top order batsmen, including John Lee 40 n.o. saw Abergele post 173 for 5. The Rugby Club struggled in their reply with wickets falling at regular intervals and were eventually all out for 90, Spencer Lumby top scoring with 21 n.o. Pick of the Abergele bowlers were Mike Thompson 3-26 and 14 year old Elliott Roberts taking 2-6 in his first evening league game – well done Elliott!
Conwy Celts had a good 25 run win over St David's College. The Celts batted first and a solid 41 n.o. from Dave Wilkinson helped them to a total of 112 for 7. St David's batted and despite Rob Ketley scoring 51 ret, the home side were bowled out for 87. The Celts had a brilliant time in the field with Hugh Kelly the star taking 4-22 with the ball, 2 catches and a run out!
Unfortunately due to a communication error, the other game in Division 3 between Eirias HS. and Fugro Robertson did not take place. Following a committee meeting on 28th May 2010 the decision was made to award Eirias 5 points as per rule 13(e). No action was taken against Robertsons.
Week 5
In Division 1 basement club Llanrwst gained their first victory of the season with a 5 wicket win over league leaders Llandrillo College at Gwydir Park. Batting first the College could only post 92 for 9, Amer Sarder top scoring with 24 and Eryl Jones returning excellent bowling figures of 6 for 11. Scott Thomas continued his fine form with the bat scoring his second 50 of the season which steered Llanrwst to 94 for 5 for a comfortable victory.
Mochdre gained an 18 run win over Bryn Y Neuadd in a closely fought contest. Mochdre scored 166 for 3 with Adam Jones 54 ret being well supported by Alex Davies 45. BYN. put up a spirited response and despite good knocks from Abdul Waheed 52 ret and Dilwyn Roberts 30 the hospital side fell just short on 148 for 6.
In the final game in Division 1 Rydal Penrhos beat Ysgol Pen Y Bryn, however no score details are available.
The top match in Division 2 saw Conwy secure a 5 wicket victory over closest rivals Lex XI. Batting first Lex scored well but also lost wickets at regular intervals, finishing on 98 all out with Alex Owen top scoring on 33. For Conwy, Jake Longmore 4-25 and Rob Miller 3-20 performed well with the ball. Despite some tight bowling by the home side, the low total was always going to be well within the reach of Conwy and good contributions from Dan Wilson 41 and Shaun Davies 23 saw the visitors to 100 for 5.
Caerhun 151 for 6 had a good 36 run win over Rhos Fynach Taverners 115 for 3. For Caerhun, Matt Tyson in his first game for over 12 months hit a fine 50 ret and was well supported by Tom Roberts 48.
In Division 3 Fugro Robertsons are still looking for their first victory after suffering a 22 run defeat at the hands on Conwy Celts. Batting first the Celts scored 123 for 4 with Nick Davies 43 n.o. and Chris Jones 33 top scoring. In reply Robertsons could only manage 101 for 7 with Russell Harris and Matt Roddy both scoring 20.
There were no other games in Div 3 due to half term.
In the Tom Barlow cup Colwyn Bay Rugby Club gained revenge over unbeaten Abergele. After a very comfortable victory in the league the previous week Abergele were favourites to progress to the semi-final and batting first posted a competitive 128 for 7; Rob Atkinson top scoring with 35 and for the Rugby Club Anthony Edwards taking 4-45 with the ball. Another good knock from Brian Phillips 33, saw the Rugby Club home to victory by 5 wickets finishing on 129 for 5.
Week 6
Things remain tight at the top of Division 1 with two of the top three teams winning this week. Mochdre lost ground when their game with Llanrwst fell foul of the weather.
Rydal has a very convincing 10 wicket win over bottom club Bryn Y Neuadd. Batting first BYN could only manage 108 for 7 off their allotted overs, Jez Shea top scoring with 26 n.o. Rydal strolled to 111 without losing a wicket, led by Heinrich Ventke 51 ret who was well supported by Tim Cashell 33 n.o.
Joint leaders Llandrillo College also enjoyed a 16 run victory over Ysgol Pen Y Bryn in a low scoring game at Brackley Avenue. College batted first and found runs hard to come by and their innings closed on 83 for 9, Asif Iqbal top scoring with 24. For Pen Y Bryn Darren Dentith took 2-9 but staring with the ball was Mike McDonagh who took a last over hat trick to finish with 3-15. In reply Pen Y Bryn lost wickets at regular intervals and found themselves at 28 for 6 before a good partnership steadied the ship, however the school side were eventually all out for 67; Steve Nicholls finishing with 26.
In Division 2 Lex XI closed the gap on leaders Conwy with a narrow 8 run win over Caerhun. Lex batted first and posted 144 for 3, Jordan Kane continuing his fine season with 52 ret, well supported by Luke Regan with 50. Caerhun put up a great effort in the run chase and despite a second successive 50 from Matt Tyson and 46 from the in form Tom Roberts, the 21 runs required from the final over proved just too much for the home side who finished on 136 for 6.
The other game in Division 2 saw Rhos Fynach Taverners secure an 8 wicket victory over closest rivals Penrhyn Arms. The Arms batted first and despite good knocks from Bryn Hughes 31 and Bobby Nellist 24 the visitors could only post 89 for 9 which was always going to be about 30 runs short of a competitive total. For the home side Paul Williams bowled well taking 5-15. The Fynach openers of Graham Heath 42 n.o. and Paul Lloyd 39 put on 78 for the first wicket which enabled their team to reach the required total of 90 comfortably in the 12th over.
In Division 3 leaders Abergele maintained their 100% league record with victory over bottom club Fugro Robertsons, who in turn are still looking for their first win of the season. Robertsons batted first and steady contributions from Tim Jones 29 and Chris Reid 21 saw them post a competitive score of 125 for 6. The home side started their reply and found runs hard to come by and with wickets falling at steady intervals it needed an 89 run stand from Ed Rooney 39 and Rich Marsh-Evans 50 ret to see them to victory on 126 for 3.
With the game between Conwy Celts and Eirias High School rained off it left Colwyn Bay Rugby Club taking maximum points from their game with St David's College.
St David's fielded a young and inexperienced side which unfortunately showed when they came to bat. The Rugby Club batted first and made 107 all out, Anthony Edwards top scoring with 26. For St David's, Adam Rowlands performed well with the ball taking 4-26. St David's really found batting difficult and with 6 of their batsmen failing to get off the mark they could only reach a total of 16 runs for the loss of all their wickets. For the Rugby Club, Spencer Lumby took 4-3 including a hat trick and was well supported by Callum Bond with 3-1 (the one run coming from a no-ball!).
The two teams play again next week where I am sure that St David's will be out for revenge!!
Week 7
Game of the week in Division 1 involved the two bottom clubs with Ysgol Pen Y Bryn recording a narrow 9 run victory over Bryn Y Neuadd. PYB batted first and posted a modest 115 for 8 with Andy Spillane, 46 being well supported by Scott Brewster 20. In reply the hospital side lost a couple of early wickets but steady contributions from Fawad Afridi 30 and Abdul Waheed 24 saw them requiring 12 runs off 16 balls for victory. However an excellent last over from Andy Spillane saw him take the last two wickets for only 3 runs and secure the win. Spillane capped a fine all round performance with 4-22 well supported by Darren Dentith 4-27.
The other game in Division 1 saw leaders Llandrillo College ease to an 84 run victory over closest rivals Rydal Penrhos. Batting first College posted 129 for 6 with Aamer Sarder 37 and Wasim Ali 26 top scoring. In reply Rydal lost wickets at regular intervals and could only manage 45 all out with not one of their batsmen reaching double figures. For the College Aamer Sarder performed equally as well with the ball taking 5-15. College also enjoyed a thrilling 3 run victory over Conwy in the Robertsons Cup. College set their opponents 143 for victory but despite a fine 54 by Phil Davies they fell just 3 runs short.
With the game between Conwy and Penrhyn Arms postponed Lex XI took full advantage to move to the top of Division 2 with a 6 wicket win over Rhos Fynach Taverners. Fynach batted first and were always struggling to sore runs because of some tight Lex bowling. Andy Greenland 20 helped the visitors post 89 all out. Lex reached the required total of 87, losing only 4 wickets with Jordan Kane top scoring with 37.
In Division 3 St David's College played 3 games in as many days, winning one and losing the other two; their 66 run victory over Fugro Robertsons being the highlight. St David's batted first with Gareth Johnson 50 and Rob Kettley 36 steering them to a total of 149 for 4. Robertsons were always struggling against some good St David's bowling; Chris Hardy taking 4 wickets and could only manage 83 all out with Sean Pyman and David Kneen both hitting 25.
In their two their games St David's lost to Colwyn Bay Rugby Club by 77 runs and to Abergele by 33 runs. Rugby Club batted first and scored 154 for 2, Dan Parry 52 ret and Brian Phillips 42 doing the damage with the bat. St David's could only manage 77 all out with Anthony Edwards 3-11 and Dan Parry 3-18 bowling well. Against Abergele the home side scored 146 for 7 with Ed Rooney 50 ret top scoring. The St David's reply started well and they found themselves 70-0 after 7 overs. However when Chris Hardy retired on 52 the reply stalled and with Rich Marsh-Evans taking 4-14 they could only reach 113 for 8.
The other game in division 3 saw Eirias High School record a comfortable 51 run victory over Conwy Celts at Brackley Ave. Eirias posted 169 for 3 with Joe Chaplin 52 ret and Zac Gidlow 49 leading the way. Despite good knocks from Mark Wolmarans 46 and Dave Wilkinson 31, Conwy were always behind the required rate and closed their innings on 118 for 5, Neil Wilkinson taking 2-22.
Eirias also enjoyed victory in the Tom Barlow Cup over Penrhyn Arms. Batting first the school side scored 153 for 3 with Neil Wilkinson 54 ret and Joe Chaplin 49 top scoring. Despite getting off to a bright start The Arms lost wickets at regular intervals which resulted in them falling behind the required rate. Good knocks from Bobby Nellist 23 and Paul Anderson 20 saw the home side to 95 all out, losing by 58 runs.
A reminder to all secretaries that there is a League Management Meeting at Colwyn Bay Cricket Club, 7pm on Friday 25th June. All clubs are requested to send a representative.
Week 8
Llandrillo College extended their lead in Division One with an 18 run victory over Mochdre. College batted first and posted 151 for 5, Anwar Awan hitting 52 off just 22 balls and Adam Jones taking 4-29. In reply Mochdre lost wickets at steady intervals and with 9 wickets down Sean McHale returned to the crease following his retirement but even his 78n.o. was not enough to secure victory with Mochdre falling just short on 133 for 9.
Llanrwst had a good 32 run win over second placed Rydal. Batting first the home side totalled 175 for 5 with Iwan Edwards 51 ret and Alex Evans 30 leading the way. Rydal’s target was always going to be a big ask and they lost their last wicket with the score on 143, Rob Stewart with 46 and Leighton Griffiths taking 3-31 for the Rwsters.
In the other game in Division One, Bryn Y Neuadd had a convincing 92 run victory over Ysgol Pen Y Bryn. The hospital side posted 176 for 9, Jez Shea 54 ret and Dilwyn Roberts 38 top scoring. In reply Pen Y Bryn could only muster 84 all out.
In Division Two, Lex XI had and easy 8 wicket win over bottom club Penrhyn Arms. The Arms batted first and fine opening partnership between Graham Dransfield 36 n.o. and Rob Rands 20 saw them post 91 for 7. This proved a modest total for the Lex batsmen with in form Jordan Kane 54 ret seeing them to victory with plenty of overs to spare.
Second placed Conwy suffered their second defeat of the season at the hands of Rhos Fynach Taverners by 8 wickets. Conwy batted first and some tight Fynach bowling restricted them to 90 for 9, Dafydd Williams taking 3-35. In reply opener Graham Heath scored a steady 32 to set up a convincing victory for the Fynach.
Abergele maintained their 100% record in Division Three with a 4 wicket victory over Conwy Celts. Some good bowling by Karl Higgins 4-27 restricted The Celts to 107 for 8 and despite losing both openers for ducks, Abergele eased to victory with Ed Rooney 37 top scoring. Hugh Kelly bowled well for the Celts taking 2-22.
In the battle of the students, second placed Eirias High School had a 52 run victory over St David's College. Batting first Eirias posted 131 all out, Zac Gidlow 53 n.o. and Gavin Johnson taking 4-19 with the ball. The final game in Division Three saw Colwyn Bay Rugby Club ease to a 6 wicket win over Fugro Robertsons. Steady knocks from Adrian Rankin 37 and Russell Harris saw Robertsons post a modest 104 for 6. The Rugby Club were always going well in reply and a fine 50 ret from Paul Wagner saw them to 105 or 4 and victory.
Several cup games were also completed this week with good victories for Caerhun, Conwy Celts and Rhos Fynach Taverners completing the semi-final line up for both cups.
Week 9
Game of the week in Division One was a thrilling encounter at Bethesda between home side Bryn Y Neuadd and Llanrwst with the visitors triumphing by just one run. Batting first the visitors scored 128 for 6 with good contributions from Eryl Jones 38 and Alex Evans 23n.o. for the home side Abdul Waheed took 3-21. In reply the hospital men made steady progress and Waheed capped a good all round performance, scoring 47. The home side found themselves needing only 3 runs off 6 balls and must have thought victory was a formality. However the Rwsters had other ideas and a run out and 4 dot balls meant that 3 runs were still required off the last ball but only one run was scored leaving BYN a run adrift on 127 for 6.
In the other game scheduled in Division One, Rydal Penrhos could not raise a team and handed a 5 point walkover to their opponents Mochdre. There were also no fixtures this week in Division two.
Division Three leaders Abergele have beaten all their opponents on the field so far this season; however they were defeated by the weather this week against St David's College. A fine 50 ret from Ed Rooney saw them post 142 for 5 and St David's were 34 for 0 when the rain came and the match had to be abandoned.
Colwyn Bay Rugby Club continued their recent fine run of form with a comprehensive 9 wicket victory over Conwy Celts. Batting first the Celts struggled and with none of their batters reaching double figures they could only score 40 all out; Dan Parry 4-7 and Anthony Edwards 4-21 doing the damage with the ball. The Rugby Club needed only 4 overs to reach the required total for the loss of just one wicket, Dan Parry adding to his success with the ball by scoring 32n.o.
The other game in Division Three saw Eirias High School secure a 10 wicket victory over basement side Fugro Robertsons. Despite resistance from David Kneen 26, some tight bowling by the school side restricted Robertsons to 61 for 7, Tom Roberts taking 3 of the wickets to fall. In reply the Eirias openers needed just 7 overs to knock off the runs with Neil Wilkinson 29n.o leading the way.
There was a bit of a shock in the Robertson Cup semi-final with holders Llandrillo College going out to second division side Caerhun. The College batted first and found runs hard to come by with Richard Pike and Tom Roberts taking 3 wickets apiece. A good knock of 33 from Anwar Anwan saw the visitors post a modest 86 for 9. In reply the Caerhun batsmen set about the College bowlers and good knocks from Matt Tyson 27 and Rhys Rowlands 24 saw them to 87 for 3 and victory by 7 wickets.
With only two weeks of the season left things are hotting up at the top of all three divisions. There are some crucial games coming up, notably Rydal Penrhos v Llandrillo College in division one and Eirias H.S. v Abergele in division three. Let’s hope the weather is fair to all and that the league titles are decided on the field of play – good luck to all sides involved.
Week 10
Two titles were decided this week with Llandrillo College and Eirias High School winning their respective leagues. In Division Two things remain tight at the top as we go into the final week.
The eagerly awaited clash of the top two teams in Division One did not materialise due to Rydal Penrhos failing to field a team, thus handing the title to Llandrillo College. Well done to the College, although I am sure they would have rather won it on the pitch. The other games in Division One saw Mochdre move into second spot with a 5 wicket win over Bryn Y Neuadd. The hospital side batted first and a fine 52 from Barry Starmer saw them post a competitive 156 for 5. However good knocks from Ross Stevens and Will Evans, both with 42 saw the visitors home to victory. Basement club Ysgol Pen Y Bryn secured a vital 5 run win over Llanrwst to lift them off the foot of the table and relegate Bryn Y Neuadd. PYB scored 123 for 6 with good contributions from Chris Spillane 36 and Andy Spillane 20. In reply some tight PYB bowling from Mike McDonagh 2-17 and Darren Dentith 2-19 saw The Rwsters require 9 off the last over for victory. However they lost 3 wickets which saw them fall just short on 118 for 8, despite a battling 50 from Eryl Jones.
In Division Two leaders Lex XI finished their season with a 15 run victory over Caerhun, making sure that they remained on top and putting pressure on closest rivals Conwy. Batting first Lex posted 137 for 5 with Jordan Kane 33 and Alex Owen 32 top scoring. In reply Caerhun got off to a good start and with Rhys Rowlands 30 they found themselves on 81 for 2; however a fine spell of bowling from Luke Regan 6-31 restricted the visitors to 122 for 9. The other game in Division Two saw Conwy ease to a 6 wicket victory over Penrhyn Arms. The Arms batted first and a good 50 ret from Paul Anderson saw them to 120 for 6 with Dan Davies taking 4-21 for the visitors. In reply Conwy opener Dan Wilson scored a quick fire 52 ret to set up victory on 123 for 4; Mark Nellist pick of The Arms bowlers with 2-19.
Eirias High School secured the Division Three title with two victories in a week. Their first game was against league leaders and previously unbeaten Abergele. The school side batted first and with openers Joe Chaplin 53 ret and Zak Gidlow 52 ret in fine form they scored an excellent 170 for 2. This total was always going to prove a tall order for Abergele and despite a battling 21 from Rich Marsh-Evans, the Eirias bowlers of Chaplin 3-25 and Neil Wilkinson 3-39 ensured that the visitors could only finish on 120 for 9. Eirias then needed a 6 point win in their next match against Colwyn Bay Rugby Club to secure the league and they didn’t disappoint. Batting first they scored a mammoth 191 for 6 with Zak Gidlow 50 ret and Johnny Whitley-Bayley 47 leading the way. In reply The Rugby Club had no answer to some devastating Eirias bowling and found themselves on 12 for 8 before a good knock of 36 from Dan Parry got them to a respectable 63 all out; Joe Chaplin finishing with excellent figures of 7-15. The other game in Division Three saw Conwy Celts beat Fugro Robertsons by 58 runs. Scores of 51 ret from Mark Wolmarans and Summit Chandran saw Celts post 157 for 4. In reply Robertsons were always behind the required rate and despite good knocks from Adrian Rankin 35 and Rob Gater 21 they could only muster 99 for 3. Despite not winning a game this season Robertsons have played all their games in great spirit which is a testament to the league.
In the Robertson Cup, Llanrwst 125 for 8 booked their place in the final with a 42 run victory over Rhos Fynach Taverners 83 all out, despite Dave Owen taking 5-35 for The Fynach.
Week 11 & 12
In the final week of this year’s Spillane & Co Evening Cricket League, Lex XI secured the Division 2 title when closest rivals Conwy had their game against Penrhyn Arms called off due to the weather.
Well done to Lex XI who joined Llandrillo College (Division 1) and Eirias High School (Division 3) as this year's League winners.
Eirias HS completed a League and Cup double with a 19 run victory over Lex XI in the Tom Barlow Cup, retaining the trophy they won last season.
Batting first Zak Gidlow opened the Eirias innings and reached his 50 with some exquisite shots. Once Gidlow retired the Lex bowlers took wickets at regular intervals with Ajay Dahlwarn finishing with 5-32. Lex lost their 10th wicket in the last over, allowing Gidlow to return to the crease and add a further 12 runs to his score leaving him undefeated on 62 and helping his side to a competitive total of 139.
The Lex reply started steadily, however when star batsmen Jordan Kane was caught behind for 9 further wickets fell and it took a fine 32 from Lewis Jones to steady the innings. Lex were always behind the required, mainly rate due to some fine bowling and fielding by Eirias. They were eventually bowled out for 120 with Joe Chaplin finishing with superb figures of 7-31 including a hat trick!! An exciting game between two good young sides played in a great spirit – well done to both sides.
The Robertson Cup final between Llanrwst and Caerhun at Colwyn Bay was a more straight forward affair with The Rwsters claiming victory by 74 runs. Llanrwst batted first and despite losing a wicket in the first over, a good stand from Eryl Jones 54 ret and Leighton Griffiths 40 lay the foundation for a total of 144 for 7. Tom Roberts pick of the bowlers with 2-35.
In reply Caerhun struggled against some excellent Llanrwst bowling and lost batsmen cheaply at regular intervals. Caerhun had no answer to the excellent left arm swing bowling of young Scott Thomas who cleaned up their middle order taking 5-15. Only Simon Beard with 16 offered any resistance for Caerhun who lost their last wicket for 70.
Well done to Alex Evans and his side who have secured the trophy after coming so close in recent seasons.
The John Hardman Sixes will be played at Llanrwst on Sunday 15th August.
Thanks to all secretaries who have contributed match reports this season.
