COLWYN BAY & DISTRICT CRICKET LEAGUE
(Founded 1965)
WEEK 8: Monday 18th - Wednesday 20th June 2007
The rain returned to mar Week 8 of the Gilbert Emery Evening Cricket League but the games that did survive the weather had a significant impact on the League standings. Rydal Penrhos took only 5 overs to pass Abergele's total of 66-9 to go 5 points clear at the top of Division 1. Nearest rivals Ysgol Pen Y Bryn began their match against Rhos Fynach Taverners by scoring over 50 runs in 5 overs until the heaven's opened and their match was abandoned as a draw.
Penrhyn Arms were celebrating their first ever league win with a Third Division victory over Bodelwyddan-Tŷ Fry. Batting first, Bodelwyddan-Tŷ Fry managed to battle their way to 52 runs before being bowled out-Tom Barrett taking 3 wickets for 4 runs. A superb knock of 35 not out by Bobby Nellist in the damp conditions was enough to see Penrhyn Arms home despite struggling at 25-8 at one point thanks to superb bowling by Alan Vaughan (5-9). Their maiden victory also lifts The Penrhyn Arms off the bottom of Division 3. Steve Jones' top-score of 46 not out proved the main difference between Caerhun and Conwy Celts. Caerhun's 28 run victory giving them a healthy 11 point lead at the top of the Third Division. Second placed Conwy Colts saw their match with St. David's College abandoned.
A third consecutive 50+ score by Mochdre's Phil Dickson helped his team to a comprehensive 83 run win over Lex XI to move 8 points clear at the top of Division 2. Russ Boswell also scored 51(retired) as Mochdre CC accumulated 176-5 from their 15 overs, Alex Owen stemming the tide claiming 2 for 12. Joel Lloyd (23), Alan Sale (23) and Luke Regan (22) all looked settled for Lex in reply but good bowling by Will Evans (3-10) helped ensure a massive Mochdre win. Mochdre Colts aided their clubmates push for promotion by thrashing second placed Bryn Y Neuadd by 84 runs at a wet Bethesda. Adam Jones (51ret) and Matthew Hunt (51ret) were the chief run-scorers as the Colts piled on the runs to finish on 169-4 from their allocated overs. Only Steve Meek (36) had any resistance to the quality bowling on display by Joe Chaplin (4-11) and Adam Jones (4-24) but the Colts had to wait until the final ball of the match to take Bryn Y Neuadd's last wicket and claim a bonus point.
