COLWYN BAY & DISTRICT CRICKET LEAGUE
(Founded 1965)
WEEK 9: Monday 25th - Wednesday 27th June 2007
Rain decimated the Gilbert Emery Evening Cricket League with only two matches beating the weather. Ysgol Pen Y Bryn welcomed Llandrillo College to Brackley Avenue and the damp outfield produced a low scoring, yet entertaining, match. The College won the toss and elected to bat but consecutive maiden overs by Richie Lewis and Darren Dentith put the pressure onto a Llandrillo team still searching for their first win of the season. Andy Spillane (3-14) and Chris Rowley (2-14) maintained the good bowling as the College were restricted to 72-7 from their 15 overs, Wasim Ali (22) easily top-scoring before being clean bowled by Rowley. Pen Y Bryn opener Chris Spillane's golden duck in the first over gave the College hope and runs proved hard to come by thanks to tight bowling from Colin Bradley (1-4) and Neil Bryan (1-5) in particular. The highlight for the fielding side was a tremendous one handed catch on the long-on boundary by Anwar Awan to remove Chris Rowley for only 4 runs. However, Rowan Rosenthal carried his bat to finish on 41not out, including 3 fours and a six, to guide his team to within a point of Division 1 leaders Rydal Penrhos as Pen Y Bryn passed their total in the 14th over for the loss of 5 wickets.
In the other match played Conwy Celts celebrated their first win of the season with an 8 wicket victory over Penrhyn Arms to move them off the bottom of Division 3 into third place. Unfortunately the League Secretary did not have any further details of this match at the time of going to press.
Unfortunately the 2007 John Hardman Sixes was washed out on Sunday at Conwy Cricket Club. Six teams had registered to play: Bodelwyddan-Tŷ Fry, Conwy Colts, Llandrillo College, Lex, Rhos Fynach Taverners and Ysgol Pen Y Bryn, but a saturated outfield and persistent showers put an end to any hope of play. Thanks to Eddie Downes and Conwy CC for their efforts.
The June meeting of the Management Committee sat this week and two teams have been punished for blatantly breaking League Rules. Caerhun and St.David's College played their Week 12 fixture on Tuesday of this week (Week 9) but failed to have their re-arrangement approved at the May meeting and took it upon themselves to play the game early without the consent of the Committee leaving both clubs in breach of Rule 14. The Committee frowned upon this and decided to utilise Rule 13e-the match was declared a 0-0 draw with both teams deducted 5 points for their breach of the rules. (Subject to appeal)
